The agenda

What the endometriosis community is asking for

Seven demands, drawn from patient advocates, clinicians and researchers. The tracker below shows who has acted on them and who has not.

  1. 01

    Fund endometriosis research

Endometriosis affects an estimated one in ten women, yet receives a fraction of the research funding of comparable conditions. Passing the Endometriosis CARE Act would direct $50 million a year to NIH research.

  2. 02

Cover excision surgery and multidisciplinary care

Insurance too often pays for hormonal suppression but not the excision surgery and pelvic floor, pain and digestive care that treat the disease itself. Coverage should follow the standard of care, not the cheapest option.

  3. 03

    Cover non-invasive diagnosis

Diagnosis still averages seven years and often requires surgery. Blood tests and imaging in development should be covered like any other diagnostic once validated.

  4. 04

    Teach it in schools

New York's 2019 law makes endometriosis education available to school districts and medical professionals. Other states should provide endometriosis education to help students recognize symptoms.

  5. 05

    Protect patients at work

Menstrual health accommodations and medical leave keep people with endometriosis in the workforce. No one should lose a job over a chronic disease.

  6. 06

Give patients a seat at the table

Commissions and advisory boards should reserve seats for people living with the disease.

  7. 07

    Count the disease

Endometriosis is absent from most public health surveillance. States and the CDC should track prevalence, diagnosis delay and outcomes the way they track other chronic conditions.
